Working from home isn’t just the now for many companies, it’s the future.
In a Gartner survey of 317 CFOs and Finance leaders conducted on March 30, 2020, 74% of participants will move at least 5% of their previously on-site workforce to permanently remote positions post-COVID 19. Meanwhile, Global Workforce Analytics estimates that post-pandemic, 30% of the entire workforce will work from home at least a couple times a week.
Work landscapes permanently shifting to the home office means it’s time to rethink how we live and work. Creating and upholding a schedule that prioritizes relaxation, self care, and paying attention to our mental health is more important than ever. In a survey by mental health provider Ginger, nearly 7 in 10 employees indicated that the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is the most stressful time of their entire professional career.
Staying sane means adapting, and adapting means upgrading your work-from-home schedule. Luckily, our fully-remote team is equipped with tips on creating the perfect live-work balance at home:
Separate your workspace from your ‘living’ space
We’re wired to mentally associate things, and the secret to strengthening your associations between a desk and your work, or your couch to relaxation is in having designated areas for each.
Light, airy spaces have been found to increase productivity, decrease depression, and improve mood and energy. However, it’s not the only small change you can make to become a productivity powerhouse.
Upping your health regimen can also provide a much-need boost
Like so many other things in life, when it comes to health, you get out what you put in–so, be sure to put in all the good stuff: a balanced diet full of leafy greens, lots of sleep, a low-stress equilibrium, and exercise.
Time and time again, striking a balance with diet and exercise has proven to be the best way to improve overall health. While everybody requires different amounts of carbs, proteins, and fats, it’s no secret that the key to keep energy flowing begins with remembering to eat nutrient-rich meals three to five times a day.
Other keys to keep yourself in good health include taking breaks during the day; a “sunbreak,” reading break, or quick phone call with loved ones can provide a refreshing recharge during the workday.
No matter what changes you make, be sure to keep hard boundaries
When it comes to improving work-life balance that means setting a time to power off work-related communications. It’s more than OK to end work at 6 p.m. because it means having dinner with your family, or to take that break at 3:30 p.m. to watch your kid’s performance; in fact, that’s how it should be.
At no point in your career should work become more important than any other aspects of your life. There’s just no balance in that. In order to create balance, transparency about your “off time” is necessary. So, if you set a ‘no phones at dinner’ rule, stand tall in practicing what you preach as well; don’t leave your loved ones hanging mid-sentence when Slack and email notifications chime in!
No matter where you’re at in creating a balanced work-from-home schedule, know that taking extra great care of yourself will positively change your life. In asking and finding the answer to the question “what do I need to live better at home?” you just might change your life!
